Over the last few years, “orange wine” has gone from being a fringe curiosity of the wine trade to being an absolute necessity for shops and restaurants alike. It makes sense – it’s not every day you hear of a new hue of wine! In fact, orange wine has been made for centuries, referred to as “amber,” “ramato,” or any number of monikers depending on the region. Put simply, orange wine is merely white wine made like a red, that is, white grape varieties fermented with their skins. The practice, uncommon for much of the 20th century, certainly has a way of bringing new expressions to the forefront. Roussely’s 100% Sauvignon Blanc iteration is particularly head-turning, combining varietal accuracy with the unique influence of skin contact. Sauv Blanc’s classic citrus and gooseberry tones are set against tangerine skin tannin and pithy bitters. “Fascinating” is one way to put it, delicious is another. Have a bottle of this with strong, washed-rind cheeses, Middle Eastern dishes, or paella.
