Bordeaux Blanc is under-appreciated, with the hyper-aromatic, opulent New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs dominating the landscape of Sauvignon-based wines these days. Of course, the more elegant and refined whites from Bordeaux are blends, and, in a way, that is the point. Semillon is the main blending partner for Sauvignon Blanc in Bordeaux and what an exquisite pair the two make, capable of producing refined, complex, and elegant dry and sweet whites. The Chateau de Chantegrive is dry and a roughly 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with a touch of the pink-skinned Sauvignon Gris in the mix. This wine has a charm and complexity that I would describe as the olfactory and gustatorial equivalent of listening to the mysterious and random music of wind chimes played by a soft warm breeze. The flavors, aromas and tactile sensations shift and move delicately, unexpectantly, constantly. Sauvignon Blanc offers up refreshing acidity along with aromas and flavors of gooseberry, passionfruit, grapefruit and cut grass, while the Semillon offers a counter-balancing textural richness on the palate, as well as its own scents of a freshly cut ripe honeydew melon, and lime zest, along with surprising notes of hazelnut and hay. Savor this wine with oysters, scallops in a cream sauce, lobster bathed in butter or a baked ham.
