In an age where even the most pedestrian Sancerre is creeping up over $30, it becomes necessary to branch out to nearby villages of similar geology and climate to source our Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. In truth, these areas have long been bastions of value beside their more vaunted neighbor, but the contrast is all the starker now. Christian and Benedicte Dyckerhoff run their small domaine of six hectares in Reuilly, about an hour west of Sancerre, but on that same vein of limestone that makes Loire Sauvignon so great. Beautifully pure and direct, the Dyckerhoff’s has great balance and zip. The fruit character threads the needle between lime and grapefruit, pea-shoot and gooseberry, and intrigues the senses with a touch of herbs. Serve this alongside some ash-ripened goat cheese, steamed asparagus with lemon, or a flaky fish such as trout.
