Savvy Syrah shoppers may already be aware that there are some very good values to be had in the Collines Rhodaniennes IGP, which encompasses essentially the entire northern Rhône Valley. The terroir is obviously quite varied from parcel to parcel, but under that appellation you’ll find both wines from as-yet-unrecognized-by-the-INAO great terroirs (like the Coteaux de Seyssuel directly opposite Condrieu) and wines from within prestigious appellations like Saint-Joseph and Cornas that for technical or emotional reasons the producer has chosen to classify as Collines instead. This is one of the latter: Syrah grown within Crozes-Hermitage on vines as yet too young to yield the power and grace expected of Crozes. It’s still beautiful wine, however. It has the distinct, intense peppery-earthy-smoky notes that are often missing or muted in less-expensive expressions of this finicky grape, along with the requisite bounty of red and purple fruit. This is fun, easygoing, pleasurable wine, ready to drink now, unlike its much more expensive cousins. It would be great with the classic pairing of roast lamb and rosemary, but would also be a good choice to break out for barbecued meat and grilled green peppers and onions.
