Sommières: the crossroad of the Languedoc and the Rhône Valley, where the coastal plains meet the foothills of the Cévennes. For decades, this area, along with slightly more famous names such as Pic-Saint-Loup and Minervois, were poised to be the great frontier of French wine. The bad news is, this never quite materialized commercially. The absolutely fantastic news? The wines are still stellar, and they have remained unbelievably affordable. This little cooperative just north of Montpelier is exemplary: small growers banding together to produce some truly compelling juice at a bargain. The combination of limestone bedrock with alluvial glacial deposits (iron, flint, and clay) makes for great blending varieties, Syrah and Grenache in this case. Stainless steel treatment makes for a pure-fruited, approachable, and juicy red with friendly red fruits and soft, chewy tannins. A house red through and through, wine like this goes with just about everything, but it’s especially well-suited to mushroom and eggplant dishes, roasted starches like potatoes and flatbreads, and any number of garlicky recipes.
