A new venture in 2014, Domaine de Pieblanc is helmed by Matthieu Ponson, who abandoned a career in the tech world to pursue his passion of becoming a winemaker. It comes so naturally to him it would be difficult to tell that he has not spent his entire life among vines. The winery sits at the foot of the famous Dentelles de Montmiral: the spectacular mountain outcropping that defines the appellation of Gigondas. Here, Matthieu vinifies Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault from his 10 hectares of 50-year-old vines, melding traditional viticulture with a decidedly modern approach in the winery. The vineyards are certified organic, and harvest and sorting are done by hand. Grapes are then cold macerated and fermented and aged in stainless-steel; no oak is used whatsoever. In this case, Syrah is the star, and a worthy one at that. Classic and punchy at once with plush purple fruit, herbal savories, pronounced black pepper, and a touch of smoky bacon, ‘Bourdon’ embodies the essence of Rhône Valley Syrah without Hermitage’s $100+ price point. This wine will be delicious with pork belly, steak tips, mushroom dishes, or duck confit.
