The story of the Jasci family mirrors that of the evolving wine scene in the Abruzzo. In the 1960’s, Pasquale and Maria Jasci began producing estate wines, a bold move in a region where almost all the wine was being produced at a cheap level by cooperatives. In the 80’s, son Giuseppe made the prescient decision to convert to organic farming, becoming one of the first ten Italian wineries to be certified, and now grandson Donatello continues the progress with a new “green winery” which gets 70% of its power from solar panels. The Montepulciano grape is of inherent quality, but it has usually been over-cropped in the interest of making big volumes of inexpensive wine. In the hands of a conscientious grower, however, Montepulciano can yield excellent wines with deep fruit and good structure. This is medium-full bodied, with ripe, hearty black cherry fruit framed by soft tannins. In the Abruzzo you might drink it with a pasta with beans or rabbit or lamb but you will find it is also very satisfying with pizza, burgers, and roast chicken.
