Montepulciano is the workhorse grape of Abruzzo in central Italy and not to be confused with the wine-producing region of Montepulciano that produces wine made with the Sangiovese grape. The Illuminati is 100% Montepulciano from the Adriatic Coast of Abruzzi and is a wonderful introduction to this variety. Estate owned and sustainably farmed; the vines grow on a hillside 250 meters above the sea where cool breezes guarantee deep, full-flavored grapes. Aromas of mint, other herbs, and blackberry set up a flavor profile which adds black cherry to the mix with a touch of anise on the finish. Eight months in Slavonian oak mean that tannins are there, but are counterbalanced by the strong succulent fruit. This wine has a light body and is easy to drink with hearty pasta dishes or pizza smothered in veggies.
