Les Vignerons D’ Estézargues redefines the concept of the farmer’s cooperative in many ways. Where many place quantity over quality, combining grapes from many growers purchased in bulk, producing simple if innocuous wine, and slapping a label on it, Estézargues and their ten growers abide by a faithful code. They practice organic viticulture and natural winemaking, keeping additives to just a little sulfur at bottling for shelf stability. Only indigenous yeasts are used at the co-op, and sites are vinified separately so as to focus on terroir. Their “Taparas Blanc” illustrates the fruits of their efforts beautifully: an intoxicating array a florals in the nose: honeysuckle to peony, exemplary of classic white Rhône. A blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, this delicious white follows on the palate with an explosion of candied yellow fruits and honeyed roundness. This will go perfectly with creamy dishes like risotto or polenta, a simple roasted chicken, or spicy cuisines like Thai or Vietnamese.
