Chinon is the wine producing appellation around the historic town of Chinon, in the central Loire Valley. This area has been producing wine for many centuries, and although wines of all three colors are made there, the focus is now very clearly on red wines, and in particular Cabernet Franc. This is a variety that can produce many different styles of wine; Cabernet Franc from Argentina, for instance, can be big and rich, also Cabernet Franc dominant Bordeaux can be elite wines of great elegance and complexity, and in the Loire Valley a lighter style of Cab Franc can also achieve levels of great complexity and depth. This Chinon from the Domain Paul Buisse, however, feels like a yummy Cru Beaujolais and is a fantastic value for an easy drinking, refreshing red. Awarded 91 Points in Wine Enthusiast, but it’s the description by wine critic Reggie Soloman that is better than the points: “Chinon is worthy of your attention, as this wine shows. Black plum skin, Darjeeling tea and pencil shavings fill the nose along with aromas of dried hay. The palate furthers the aroma resplendence, completing the wine with a long, savory, enjoyable finish” This is a wine perfect with a simple meal; think dry-brined thick pork chops on the bone with a light touch of cayenne baked with small roast potatoes.
