Not only is Stellenbosch “end-of-the-world” dramatically stunning in its natural beauty, it is also one of the best places on the planet to nurture and farm vines for the production of wine. At the southernmost tip of the African continent near Cape Town and surrounded by two oceans (the Atlantic to the west converges with the Indian Ocean to the east off the Cape of Good Hope), Stellenbosch presents an ideal climate for the production of fine wines. This delicious white is made with 100% Chenin Blanc, an underappreciated grape that thrives in South Africa. French Chenin from the Loire Valley can be spectacular, but South Africa produces equally great Chenin Blanc and the Le Chant is a good example of how Chenin Blanc can combine the cut and freshness of dry Riesling with the opulence of a full-bodied Chardonnay. This wine exhibits layered aromas of white apple, stone fruit, as well as hints of jasmine and orange blossom. On the palate there is a harmonious interplay of a mouth-watering acidity and an unctuous mid-palate weight that gives the wine a satin rich feel on the long finish with aromas rising from the back palate echoing the scents first encountered rising from the glass.
