If you know the wines of Chablis this is a very fine example, but if you don’t and you think you don’t like Chardonnay you should try this wine. Chablis is the northernmost appellation of Burgundy and its famous limestone soils and cool climate combine to produce remarkably fresh and invigorating Chardonnays. This bottle is classic Chablis, pale gold in color with greenish hues and showing citrus and orchard fruit aromatics along with hints of fern and coriander. Very clean but flavorful on the palate where there is a refreshing acidity but also a noteworthy mid-palate weight. A must with oysters and shell fish this delightful wine is also a natural partner with cod, halibut, roast chicken or even to wash down some good chèvre. As an historical aside it is worth noting that the wines of Maison Joseph Drouhin are impressive but perhaps not so much as the man Joseph Drouhin who fought with the Resistance during WWII. When the Germans came to the winery to arrest him, he escaped through the family cellars and was hidden by the Hospices de Beaune for a couple of weeks before he was able to rejoin the Resistance. I know you can’t taste bravery in wine, but I seem to sense it nonetheless.
