Third generation vigneron Damien Martin is making serious waves in the Mâcon. He took over his father’s ten hectares of holdings in 2010, then set about doubling that footprint over the ensuing vintages. All of the Martin family's holdings lie in the pastoral fields between Roche de Solutre and Roche de Vergisson, the iconic twin jutting cliffsides that mark the southernmost appellations of Burgundy. Damien's style is all about tension, evidenced by the liquid in the glass. He harbors a deep fascination with site specificity, a quality that separates him apart in the Mâcon. Parcels are vinified separately before blending, which allows him the opportunity to adjust in reaction to vintage conditions as well as how the wine is evolving after fermentation. He is meticulous about everything in differentiating plots: soil type, incline, vine age, etc. His Verze is particularly compelling: 90% stainless steel with just a kiss of oak. Precise citrus and stone fruit aromas, hints of acacia, honeysuckle, and verbena on the palate. Vibrant yet rich. Serve this with roasted poultry and vegetables, fleshy fish, cream sauces, and light, fresh cheeses.
