In 1523, the Albizzi family boarded a ship in Florence, Italy bound for the New World. The voyage proved far shorter than expected, however, running aground in Cassis, France; bad luck, certainly, but there are worse places to be marooned than beautiful Provence. Stranded indefinitely, the family took up winemaking to make ends meet. They never left, and over the next five centuries, the family’s immediate misfortune blossomed into a beautiful history. They became the Dumon family by marriage over the ensuing generations and expanded their holdings to over 14 lovely hectares of organically farmed vineyards. Their rosé, a signature styling of the Cassis appellation, is a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre: old school. Full in body but lively on the palate with gorgeous delicate notes of dried strawberry, Bosc pear, and lemon zest, the key here is the unmistakable maritime kiss of the Mediterranean. Full yet refreshing, tremendous with food, and true to roots burrowed deep in Cassis itself.Serve it alongside fried seafood with aioli, feta and chevre cheeses, and roasted dark meat poultry like duck (or quail if you can find it!).
