Menetou Salon is the smaller, less-known neighbor to Sancerre, existing very much in the shadow of the more famous appellation despite the high quality of its wines. Menetou-Salon has the same prized Kimmeridgian marl soils found in Sancerre and the wines—primarily mineral-driven Sauvignon Blanc—are similar. The biggest difference is the higher price commanded by the wines of Sancerre. The Chavet family has been cultivating vines in Menetou-Salon since the 17th century. They use green-harvesting techniques to minimize yields and coax the best from the ancient soils on their Central Loire Valley estate. This wine is just what you want in a Sauvignon Blanc from this part of the world. Stony, citric characteristics are carried along the palate by fresh, juicy acidity. There is a lot of finesse here for a small price tag.
