That this wine is still available to us in and of itself is amazing. A great producer just outside Saint-Emilion who still has the heralded 2016 vintage to sell?! We won’t complain. Third generation winemaker Pierre-Emmanuel Janoueix has held the reins at his family’s property in Montagne, a satellite of Saint-Emilion, for 24 years now, and his experience shows. From vines planted on a gentle slope over clay-limestone soils, his Merlot is supple and ripe, yet fresh and vibrant, and despite its vivacity, the secondary and tertiary pleasures of bottle age are just starting to peak out: a combination of ripe currant and pomegranate fruit, graphite mineral character, and whispers of toasted almond and spice. There is good reason to drink Merlot from the Saint-Emilion area, and Château La Bastienne embodies it. This wine will be perfect with duck confit, braised sausages, classically prepared steak, Comte cheese, and mushroom dishes.
