It might come as a surprise that some of the best wine values in the world are coming out of Bordeaux, especially when one compares quality equivalent wines from Burgundy or Napa Valley for example. And the Beaumont featured here is a stylish and elegant example that hits all the right notes at a remarkable price. Winegrowing at Château Beaumont dates back to 1824 and the current château is a pure jewel of Mansart-style architecture. Its exotic history includes an unusual collection of characters: a Breton aristocrat, a Honduran minister, a Parisian industrialist, a lieutenant-colonel from Caracas, a Venezuelan senator, etc. – twelve different owners who ensured that Beaumont was enjoyed around the world. The wine itself, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, is a pure expression of left bank Bordeaux. Wine Enthusiast awarded the 2020 vintage 92 Points: “Ripe, soft, revealing sumptuous black fruits, this wine shows an impressive side to this estate. Tannins and black fruits are coming together well, with ripe black currant flavors and fine density. The wine will be worth aging.” This is beautiful companion for all types of grilled red meats or to accompany a plate of hard cheeses. Buy some extra bottles for the cellar and give them a few years to reveal even more suave complexity.
