The quality-to-price ratio for this Bordeaux from some of the best terroir in the prestigious Pessac-Leognan appellation is simply off the charts. Wine Critic James Suckling rated it a whopping 94 points. We think Mr. Sucking is prone to grade inflation at times, but you cannot argue with the high quality of this classic Left-Bank blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. From the stunning 2016 vintage, the Baret is your father’s Bordeaux—in the best possible way. Seven years of bottle age have brought the wine to an exemplary stage of development. Its tannins have mellowed. Primary fruit flavors of cherry, plum and cassis—juicy and plush—mingle with secondary characteristics of pencil lead, tobacco, and leather. The fresh fruit on the palate is enlivened by a mineral element for which Pessac-Leognan wines are known. This is a graceful, classically styled Bordeaux that is built to impress—easily a case-buy for Bordeaux lovers and a fantastic introduction to the charms of old-school Bordeaux for the uninitiated.
