Entirely Merlot, ‘little Lauren’ is a new project from Hubert de Bouard of famed Château Angélus in Saint-Emilion. Held until ready, the current vintage is the beloved 2016. This is truly sophisticated Bordeaux, especially when price is considered: red currant and black cherry fruit character set off by complex tones of tobacco, and woodsy spice. The texture is supple with bouncy, pliable tannins. But in an age when a vast majority of wine is consumed too young, the nine years of maturity and peak drinkability here is the true star. Set this up with some nice steak frites, duck confit, lamb chops, or mushrooms – think classic here
