You’d never guess that Pinot Gris from the Alsace region in France is the same grape varietal as Italy’s Pinot Grigio. That is because Pinot Gris from the Alsace is typically richer and fuller bodied than Pinot Grigio from Italy. Why is this so? It’s partially a function of different weather and soils, of course, but the biggest difference is that of the winemaking aesthetic in these two areas. This is a classic example of the Alsace style, with lush fruit, quasi-creamy texture and long, slightly smoky, finish. The village of Turckheim is famed for the quality of its vineyards and the Cave de Turckheim makes excellent wines at attractive prices. With its juicy ripe peach-like fruit this crowd-pleaser pairs beautifully with a wide range of foods, from spicy southeast Asian cuisine to roast chicken with garlic and herbs and it is also perfect for the mix of dishes on a typical Thanksgiving table.
