Alsace is distinct from other major French wine regions in that the wines are labeled varietally and most of the production is white. Dry and seductively fragrant, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Muscat express themselves differently here than anywhere else in the world. The exception to the single-variety rule in Alsace is a traditional blend known as Gentil d’Alsace. Originating in the 1920s, Gentil was traditionally a blend of different grape varieties from the same parcel, a sort of super Alsatian, if you will. This version comes from wine maker Felix Meyer, who is known for his blending mastery. A rising star in Alsace, he is the third generation of wine makers in his family since his grandfather founded Meyer-Fonne in the late 19th century. The Gentil is an organic cuvee of primarily Riesling, Muscat and Pinot Blanc with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris and Sylvaner. It sings with flavors of pear, mimosa blossom, coriander and minerals. It’s a wine that makes you stand up and take notice in addition to being a fantastic partner with a wide variety of foods. It is the white wine to pair with Thanksgiving dinner or moderately spicy Asian cuisine.
