Agiorgitiko (aka “Saint George”) is the most important red grape of southern Greece’s Peloponnese (which produces about 30% of Greece’s wine) and it finds its perfect home in the elevated rocky terrain of this mountainous region. With dark berry fruit and moderate tannins, it is often vinified as a “serious” structured wine with oak ageing. This, however, is not that kind of wine but instead is an unoaked, easy-drinking version of Agiorgitiko – supple and juicy, with blackberry-like fruit and just a gentle nip of tannin. This is a versatile everyday red that will unobtrusively partner nicely with things like pizza, roasted meats, tomato sauces, and spiced cuisines from the Middle East to India. If the rising tide of good Greek wines has not yet made its way to your dinner table, let this be your introduction.
