Livio Voghera’s 22 hectares of vineyard holdings in the Langhe are a scattered affair, a few plots here, another there. The emphasis is site specificity; he and his family own parcels in a pair of less commonly found Cru sites of Barbaresco: Cottà and Basarin, great Nebbiolo-based wines to be sure. But for enjoyment on any Tuesday of the month alongside a modest weeknight dinner, Livio’s Langhe Nebbiolo bottling is not to be missed. While the non-Cru labels denote origins of typically large scope (“Alba,” for example, a huge swath of land), each wine is actually sourced from tiny plots. All the wines are fermented in tank for purity of fruit, and while some may remain in stainless steel for ageing thereafter, the Nebbiolo is moved to Allier Forest oak casks (wood noted for its tight grain). The results speak for themselves: a classic expression of Nebbiolo with tones of black cherry, rose petal, violet, and clove spice. Light in color yet assertive in character with persistent tannins and lively freshness there is no mistaking this wine for anything other than the king of Italy: Nebbiolo. Perfect for slow-cooked roasts, caprese salad, and dry aged cheeses.
