Luigi Voghera and his wife, Pinuccia, put down roots in the small town of Tetti in 1974. Here in the hills of Neive, at the epicenter of the Barbaresco appellation, their farm has grown over the ensuing half century to a respectable 22 hectares scattered throughout the Langhe. Sadly, Luigi passed on, but his son, Livio, has proven to be a great winemaker in his own rite. Their specialty, as with so many in the Piedmont, is Nebbiolo, but Livio also produces delicious Arneis on the white wine side of the ledger. An oft-forgotten grape of the Piedmont, many years ago Arneis was planted amongst Nebbiolo vines because its ripe aromas and flavors attracted birds away from the other vines. Certain enterprising producers, however, envisioned that same concentrated juiciness in a white wine, and thank goodness! Bright and tangy yet plush and fruity with tones of ripe apple and white peach. Make no mistake, however, Arneis is capable of producing wines of some seriousness as well as simple, delicious swilling whites! Put Voghera’s right in the middle of that continuum: this is tasty wine for immediate consumption, but not so simple as to bore, showing all that pleasant stone-fruited freshness. Try it with seared white fish like sole or halibut, white pizza, or a nice round of Tomino cheese with warmed bread.
