Who doesn’t love Glera. The grape used to produce Prosecco. Although today well known for making sparkling wines to be enjoyed easily as an aperitif, Glera has been in existence around the countryside of Veneto for a very long-time, long before Prosecco wines achieved international fame and popularity. One of the most unique territories where Glera (known locally as Serprina) has thrived and shown a unique style, are the hills surrounding the beautiful city of Padova, known as Colli Euganei. The Euganean hills are a series of lusciously green and vibrant hills that are what remains of once submarine volcanoes that were lifted above sea level at the same time the Alps were forming. The mineral rich soils give this wine a great persistence of flavor, texture, and crunchy acidity. Serprino is a DOC appellation where Glera expresses best the terroir it grows in. Vigna Roda is an organic producer and “Rebégolo” is Venetian dialect for a lively, curious, and rebellious child. This wine is frizzante, an Italian term for less aggressively sparkling wines with lower levels of dissolved carbon dioxide than most Prosecco. This gentler level of effervescence has a charm and appeal. In the glass it has a beautiful straw color with fine bubbles, hints of golden apple, pear and pineapple on the nose balanced by a creamy mousse. Delicious to enjoy as an aperitif but also excellent as a companion to fish preparations like scallops, shrimp, crustaceans, and shellfish.
