Situated just a mile within the Spanish border at the northeastern tip of Portugal, Adegas Valtea sits on the edge of the river Miño. The estate’s vineyards cover 37 acres and is almost entirely dedicated to Albariño. These 30-year-old vines benefit from the natural terracing that characterizes this part of the river valley. While winemaker Carla Gonzalez Chao emphasizes that the key to great wine is great grapes, there is no doubt that her special talents are responsible for capturing a fine balance of fruit and minerality. The grapes’ concentrated juice imparts balance, freshness, and richness, all hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel tanks. In the glass, Valtea boasts notes of tart golden plum skin, crisp apple, and meadowsweet with bracing salinity. Enjoy this alongside some tinned mackerel or branzino, fresh oysters or clams (remember, cold months are the best time for them!), or all manner of deep-fried dishes.
