The region of Sancerre is best known for its white wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, wines that often deliver both elegance and power. It is, however, worth your while to explore the less common Sancerre Rouge wines that are also available in the market. Most people are surprised to discover that Sancerre reds even exist, but there is a treasure trove of Pinot Noir here that we would like you all to experience. Pinot Noir from Sancerre is all about delicacy, rich with sensory details as intricate as French lace. The Domaine Romain Reverdy Rouge is a beautiful example of Sancerre Pinot Noir. From vineyard to cellar everything is done to preserve the graceful beauty of the fruit. Harvested from vines 40+ years in age, the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed. The crush undergoes a cold pre-fermentation maceration to gently extract aromatic compounds and color. Alcoholic fermentation occurs with indigenous yeast followed by two to three weeks of maceration with regular daily pump overs to fully extract color, tannins and aroma/flavor compounds into the wine. After pressing, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barrels, a process that adds complexity and texture. The result is a beautiful Pinot Noir that is a translucent cherry red in the glass and opens with aromas of red fruits including redcurrant, wild strawberry, and morello cherry enhanced by hints of spice like clove and cinnamon. Supple on the attack, the palate offers an unctuous roundness supported by beautifully ripe tannins. This is a perfect wine for poultry, white and red meats, as well as mature cheeses.
