Fattoria Rodáno has been called “one of Tuscany’s best-kept secrets.” (Is it a well-kept secret if their Chianti Classico just got a “Best Buy” from Wine & Spirits Magazine? Maybe not.) Their former winemaker, Giulio Gambelli, was one of the giants of the Sangiovese world. In his absence (Gambelli died in 2012), the wine is still produced in a staunchly traditionalist style, eschewing smaller barrels for large Slavonian oak botti and retaining the use of Canaiolo and Colorino as blending partners with Sangiovese. (This wine is 90% Sangiovese and 10% the other two). This is a powerful wine, comparable to Classicos twice the price. Classic cherry, strawberry, rose and blackberry all the way, with a bit of minerality, and a bit of graphite. Red meat, roast meat, and robust stews should all work well with this, but it would go especially well with a ragu alla bolognese.
