Graciano, until recently, had been used solely as a small percentage blending grape in Rioja. Graciano's intense aromatic profile makes the variety very popular with winemakers, who use it mostly in the classic Rioja blend with Tempranillo and Garnacha. The variety's presence is felt in blends even when used in small volumes. In this regard, it has much in common with Petit Verdot, another color-rich, flavor-packed, red wine variety prized for its role in blends and only rarely vinified alone. Rio Madre is the flagship wine of Bodegas y Viñedos Ilurce and it represents a turning point as it was one of the first bottlings of monovarietal Graciano from Rioja. Historically used in tiny quantities (only representing 1.5% of total plantings in Rioja) as a blending variety, the Escudero family recognized the potential for quality from their vineyards for an estate bottled inexpensive monovarietal Graciano. Dark ruby in color this wine exhibits aromas of blackberry, cherry pit, pungent flowers and a hint of olives. Rich and fleshy on the palate and offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors that take a spicy turn through the mid-palate. Smooth tannins come in late to add shape to the long finish that has subtle hints of mint leaf. A natural with roasted vegetables, corn on the cob and perfect for red meats from the grill especially lamb.
