Gallura, the wine region at the northern tip of Sardegna and the island’s only DOCG appellation, is home to some of the very best Vermentino in the world. These sandy, granite-based soils lie at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea’s mistral winds and the warm Sirocco winds of the Sahara. The result is fruit of ample ripeness and concentration from warm days, dry conditions, and hard-working vines. Piero Mancini fell in love with the island as a child, and has been tending Vermentino vines in Gallura since the 1960’s. He started his own winery in 1989, an operation he has bestowed on his children these days. The estate’s Vermentino di Gallura is a prime example of the style: tropical tones of mango and banana set against salty saline and tangy citrus. This is a great bottle to serve alongside some crudo or ceviche, seafood fregola, or something autumnal like squash.
