Swirl your glass and sniff. Let’s say you find notes of ripe apricots, honeysuckle, May blossom, and gingerbread. Next put the glass to your expectant lips and taste a lush and viscous liquid with as much body as a fine Chardonnay and an aftertaste that is not at all cloying, but fresh and vibrant, impelling you to take another sip. That is what is in this bottle: a classic and exotically delicious example of a finely crafted wine made with Viognier (pronounced VEE-oh-nyay), a grape variety that was almost extinct only 50+ years ago. In the late 1960s there was a mere 14 hectares of vineyard all clinging the steep banks of the northern Rhône valley just south of Lyon. Now Viognier is grown in almost every wine-producing region on the planet, and this example from Oregon is revelatory: it makes you sit up and take notice. I cannot think of a better white wine for the Thanksgiving feast, but really this is a very versatile food wine that pairs with aromatic Thai cuisine, seafood stews, roasted pork and would be a fine aperitif before a meal.
