Zabala Vineyard is a rocky, wild vineyard located on the floodplains of the Arroyo Seco River. The land was granted to the Zabala family before California received it’s statehood, and was planted in the 1970s. Ian Brand, the winemaker, is an expert in identifying vineyards of high quality with unique characteristics. He has a vision that focuses on sustainability, high quality, and affordability in order to get his wines into as many people’s homes as possible. The vineyard, though located in a warmer climate, has its heat tempered by the Salinas Valley winds. This helps in maintaining freshness and natural acidity in the wines. The grapes are certified organic, fermented with indigenous yeast, and rested in neutral oak. The result is a high acid Sauvignon Blanc, with bright notes of melon, green apple, and white peach, rounded out with a subtle creamy note thanks to the oak. A unique and deliciously balanced wine that will pair well with Teriyaki, Lemon Pepper Chicken, and hard cheeses such as Vermont Cheddar.
