Cantina Paltrinieri ranks among the most important producers of Lambrusco: those oh-so-delicious bubbles of Emilia-Romagna in northeast Italy. Located in Sorbara, the sub-zone fully encompassing the city of Modena, their benchmark wines exhibit a depth of character that makes the cloyingly sweet, mass-produced red sparklers consumed by the college students of yesteryear feel like a fever dream. Since 1926, the Paltrinieri family has been producing Lambrusco, when Achille Paltrinieri began the operation in Sorbara that he would run for the next 40 years. Now in the fourth generation, the enterprise is helmed by Alberto Paltrinieri and his wife Barbara; the couple took over in 1998. Suffice to say, Paltrinieri has some truly generational authority when it comes to the “right way” to produce Lambrusco. Their “Solco,” perhaps the most traditional bottling they make, is a medium-dry frizzante red. Distinctive tones of black cherry, blackberry, and graham cracker, it is irresistibly charming with pleasant lingering fruit. Accompany with antipasti and cheese with olives, bread with good olive oil, and even light airy pastries.
