Mencía is the grape and Bierzo is the region in northwest Spain. The proximity of the Atlantic has an important influence on the climate of Bierzo ameliorating the hot summers of Spain and influencing the increased rainfall for the area. Mencía has long been the dominant grape here, but it is only relatively recently that the wines have found an enthusiastic international audience. Many compare Mencía with Cabernet Franc owing to its combination of red fruit, floral and leafy aromas, earthy notes, and bright acidity, but perhaps it is more like a cross of Cab Franc and Gamay (the grape responsible for the fruit-forward wines of Beaujolais). The Pago de Valdoneje is classic Mencía nurtured from old vineyards 85+ years in age. The grapes were harvested by hand at a late stage, seeking optimal fruit ripeness. In addition, the grape bunches were passed through a selection table to discard bunches that are not up to the quality standards for this wine. An intense red color with violet hues in the glass, this wine exhibits lifted aromas of red and black fruits – cherries, blackberries and wild berries – as well as leafy scents of forest floor, balsamic notes, mint, and anise. Drink this with a large plate of cured meats, as long as there is a hefty portion of Jamón ibérico. Excellent also with grilled vegetables and roasted pork, this wine can take you to Spain in your mind, so why not pair this with a saffron infused chicken and chorizo paella.
