Fans of California Chardonnay will find plenty to love in this textured and focused example from Sonoma, but those who favor a more retrained style will likely appreciate it too. Neyers calls it their Chablis-style Chardonnay. It is not nearly as lean as that description might suggest, but it is a great deal fresher and more elegant than a typical New World Chardonnay. As with Chablis, the grapes for this wine come from cooler vineyards with stony soils. The grapes are given a light, whole-cluster pressing, then the juice is racked to a stainless-steel tank for fermentation, using only the native, wild yeast trapped on the grape skins during the final stage of fruit maturation. Malolactic fermentation is allowed to proceed, but typically only about 50% or so of the Malic acid is converted to lactic acid, preserving the wine’s fresh character. Also, to that end, the wine sees no oak treatment during production. Juicy apple flavors predominate on the palate while aromas of tree blossoms, ginger spice, and lemon zest for an appealing, balanced example of Chardonnay from a small family winery. The wine was rated 90 points or more by three major wine publications. It’s a truly exemplary Sonoma Valley Chardonnay and an excellent value. Perfect for rich seafood dishes: lobster, scallops, salmon, or halibut.
