Luccarelli wines are crafted in an ultra-modern winery called Terre di Sava, in the village of Sava. Just down the road is Salice Salentino where Negroamaro is said to have dominated the vineyards since the 6th Century BC! The grapes in this incredibly affordable red are sourced from very old vines (up to 80+ years old) and represent the cooperative efforts of hundreds of local growers. Planted in the iron-rich Terrarossa soils with calcareous bedrock, the vines are trained in the traditional Albarello style, also known as Bush Vines. Vineyards this old benefit from extensive root structures that penetrate deep down in search of water in the hot, dry summers. These naturally low-yielding old vines produce an almost black purple red wine with intense dark fruit and dried fruit aromas and flavors. The finish is long with spicy thyme inflected notes. This is quintessential pizza wine, but also a perfect pair for barbecue as well as Puglia’s famous Lamb and Orange Stew.
