La Mesma is the tale of three sisters who were challenged by their mother to start a vineyard with the valuable land their family owned in Gavi di Gavi, the epicenter of great winemaking in Piedmont’s greatest appellation for whites. Paola, Francesca, and Anna own about 100 hectares, but most of it is dense forestry of the Ligurian Apennines; only about 25ha are under vine. Here, just north of Genoa and closer to the sea than any other appellation in Piemonte, the three sisters grow only Cortese grapes on red clay soils at 300 meters of elevation: perfect for fresh whites. Their “Le Rose” bottling is made for easy enjoyment and versatile pairing. Aromas of white flowers, chamomile, and golden apple with tones of Asian pear, green plum, and tarragon on the palate. La Mesma is fully organic with a firm commitment to sustainability and biodiversity. Serve “Le Rose” alongside lightly treated poultry dishes like poached chicken or turkey, white pizza, butter or cream sauces, and simple sea fare.
