Looking for a simple pleasure? Get some fresh local oysters, or a plate of sushi, maybe slices of smoked salmon with a vegetable crudo, include a side of herbed goat cheese and marry them with a chilled glass of this Muscadet and viola! Yes this is a simple white wine, not fine or profound on its own. However, when paired with the right food it shines. In the words of wine critic/writer Andrew Jeffords in his superb book The New France: “At its best, of course, these crisp refreshing whites with their faint flavours of bread and lemon can be superb partners for oysters and fish. Thus, over a lunch table, the simple wine acquires grandeur, and the act of drinking it becomes an epiphany.” Good fresh seafood and a pretty, understated wine to support and enlarge the subtle beauty of the food: sounds like a perfect wine for the South Shore to me. There is a palpable charm to this white made with 100% Melon de Bourgogne from an historic 15th century vineyard site situated in the Côtes de Grandlieu AOC near Grand-Lieu lake, just west of Nantes. The lake and maritime influence of the Atlantic join forces to help mature the grapes earlier than the rest of the Muscadet region. The vinification includes extended aging for seven months on lees with battonage once a month gives the wine additional structure and texture.
