Chardonnays from the Willamette Valley in Oregon are shining bright these days. We are more familiar, of course, with their world-class Pinot Noirs, but there has been a notable increase in the quality of the Chardonnays from this part of Oregon. Some of this surge in quality has been attributed to the fact that Chardonnay vineyards planted to the Dijon clone in the Willamette Valley have achieved a sufficient age, and these fully mature vines are ripening high-quality fruit that is being fashioned into balanced and elegant wines. This is a beautiful example of a Willamette Chardonnay, from one of the most experienced and gifted viticulturists and wine-makers in the region: Ken Wright who has been farming vineyards and making wines in the Willamette since the 1980s. On the nose there is a mix of juicy white peach, green apple and fresh Asian pear all surrounded by complex notes of honey, vanilla bean and hints of butterscotch. The mouth-feel is unctuous and plush, finishing with a mouth-watering refreshing acidity. In short, this is a seriously compelling Chardonnay to pair with baked salmon, scallops in cream sauce, lobster or roast poultry.
