Australia is a relatively young country, but they have been producing wine in the Barossa Valley since the late 19th century. The Glaetzer family is one of the first to plant vineyards and produce wines in this now renowned wine producing region. The first Glaetzers settled in the Barossa Valley in 1888 after emigrating from Brandenburg, Germany. The family left Germany on board the Nord-Deutscher Lloyd steamer “Habsburg” and took seven weeks to reach their final destination of Port Adelaide. From here they settled in the Barossa Valley where they started their new life in Australia. Perhaps it is not surprising that this multigenerational winemaking family produces some of Australia’s most elegant wines. The Wallace is a traditional blend of 78% Shiraz and 22% Grenache. Shiraz brings the backbone, flesh and body to the wine with the Grenache adding a soft, vibrant juiciness. Lifted aromas of rose petal, cola and licorice fragrances compliment the dark fruited and spicy Shiraz and the strawberry/cherry brightness from the Grenache. This is a fine wine for roasted or braised red meats and stews, but it also compliments dry brined pork loin or mushroom risotto.
