This “entry-level” Nebbiolo from one of the great Barolo houses in the Piedmont is at the quality level of some other estates’ Barolos. A hefty claim I know, but try a glass and see for yourself. Five generations of Fenocchios have been producing wine from their holdings in Monforte d’Alba since 1894. Most of the production was sold locally up until 1964, when the ambitious and energetic Giacomo Fenocchio took over the estate. In his quest to make the finest wines in all of Barolo, he purchased prime parcels in Cannubi and nearby Castellero, but his focus was always on what he liked to call the heart of the Barolo area, the Bussia. After Giacomo came his son Claudio who never strayed from the path of tradition. He continues producing his wines with the time-honored techniques of the classic style: organic farming, with long fermentations on the skins and aging only in large Slavonian oak casks. Today Claudio’s wines exhibit a level of terroir clarity that is only found in the top echelon of producers. “Imagine being kicked in the face by a ballerina” is one wine critic’s description of drinking Nebbiolo, which can have soaringly beautiful aromatics along with fiercely palate-drying tannins. However, skillfully farmed, and vinified Nebbiolo can enfold the tannins in such elegance that the wine is all bouquet and silk. Wine critic Kerin O’Keefe, a true Barolo aficionado, describes this wine beautifully: “The Langhe Nebbiolo from Giacomo Fenocchio boasts plenty of personality and as well as polish, starting with its aromas of dog rose, red woodland berry, truffle, and cake spice. Reflecting the nose, the full-bodied, savory palate doles out succulent Morello cherry, cinnamon, orange zest and the slight warmth of alcohol recalling brandy. Polished tannins lend seamless support.” This wine can handle all types of roasted red meats, but the classic pairing is with Truffle Risotto - the intense, earthy flavors of truffles, are beautifully enhanced by the complex notes of this Nebbiolo.
