You would be hard pressed to find a better full-bodied red at this price. A blend of roughly half Cabernet Sauvignon and half Malbec harvested from high altitude vineyards (3,000 to 4,000 ft above sea level) in the foothills of the Andes, this is, as advertised, a mountain character wine. At these elevations the nights are very cold and the sunlight during the day very intense. This produces grapes with thicker skins as the vine protects its seeds from strong sun exposure and low temperatures. The result is a wine rich in tannins with intense aromatics and flavors. The harvest takes place during the cool hours of the morning. The components of the blend were carefully selected in the vineyard from special lots and aged separately for 8 to 10 months in French and American oak barrels, 30% of which are new. Very concentrated and fragrant, with an outstanding aromatic mix of dark fruits including black currants, blackberries, cherries, and plums with a light resonating piquancy of licorice and vanilla. Very full on the palate and finishing with silky tannins, this is a wine to accompany grilled, roasted, or braised red meats, and would be equally at home paired with a big block of aged cheddar.
