Fattoria di Felsina has long been one of the great names in Tuscany. Based in the Chianti Classico region, Felsina produces one of the finest ranges of age-worthy and complex Chianti bottlings. Unlike many of their neighbors, Felsina has never succumbed to the temptation to produce “new age” wines from their fine Chianti vineyards, and continues to grow solely Sangiovese here, rather than dabble with international-styled blends that include Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. Consequently, their elegant yet intensely flavored Chiantis place them firmly among the top handful of Chianti producers. This Chianti is sourced from Felsina estate vineyards that are just outside the Chianti Classico region in the Colli Senesi. 100 percent Sangiovese, this wine is a blend from eleven Colli Senesi vineyards and each vineyard is vinified separately. The final blend is made at the end of the aging process, shortly before bottling. The nose is the epitome of the intense, voluptuously fruity, and spicy Felsina wines: dark forest berries with bay leaf, pepper, cloves, rustically spicy, ethereal herbs, and warm. On the palate this wine is lush, juicy, and vibrantly fresh with red cherry fruit and red currant. The finish shows fine chalky tannins along with tar and graphite-like minerality. Drink this voluptuous Chianti with a traditional Bolognese ragu or a thick Tuscan Steak - Bistecca alla Florentina - which is essentially a steak with a touch of olive oil, garlic, and rosemary.
