It’s the best time of year for Cru Beaujolais; something about the crisp weather makes the omni-present thirst for Gamay all the more un-ignorable. Chiroubles, one of the ten “Crus,” is a good step up in quality from your typical "Villages" level Beaujolais (and an even bigger step up from the ubiquitous “Nouveau” that is little more than grape juice). Fabien Collonge seems to understand his 40+-year-old vines grown on the appellation’s signature pink granite soils intrinsically. His wine shows freshly crushed blue fruits and violets with the savory wild herbs of the region. Gamay’s persistent acidity and supple, lip-smacking juiciness flourish on the pallet. Crowd-pleasing, versatile, and eminently enjoyable with a chill or without, Collonge Chiroubles is a must-have in every household during the holiday season! Serve alongside grilled rare salmon, charcuterie and cheese plates, mezze, and especially roasted duck.
