Though Malbec is best known in recent years as the approachable, easy drinking, fruity red wine from Argentina, its birthplace is actually in southern France. Originally hailing from the picturesque town of Cahors, French Malbec has many similar characteristics to its Argentinian cousins, however they tend to be drier with a more serious and structured palate. More comparable to good Bordeaux in a lot of ways, but without the hefty price that a lot of them command. Domaine du Prince has been family owned and operated for over three hundred years. They focus on the conservation and development of their lands having been awarded the HVE certification for sustainable farming. This attention to detail is seen in the winemaking as well as they hand sort the grapes, use only natural yeasts, and classic barrel aging; never using oak chips. This 100% Malbec spends four weeks of maceration on the skins for maximum extraction before being rested in French oak barriques for a year. Powerful on the nose with notes of blackberry, blueberry, currant, and a touch of spice and earth. Medium bodied on the palate with balanced tannins. A great pairing with any barbeque foods, a juicy rib eye or some duck confit.
