This is an excellent example of how well Tempranillo can be wedded with oak, a wine with lovely primary red fruits perfectly integrated with toasty oak influences: vanilla, baking spices and hints of a balsamic component. Located in western Spain in the province of Zamora, the Dehesa La Granja winery is built on a sprawling ranch, where the 250 hectares of high-quality Tempranillo vines produce wines that are large in volume, structure and depth. The Tempranillo vines were taken from grafts from the famous Condado de Haza estate. An ancient winery with an underground cellar in which the wines could be aged in perfect conditions was restored and renovated. The climate on central Spain’s elevated plateau (700-750 meters above sea level) is intensely continental, and to deal with these extreme conditions the berries form thick skins that produce wines with saturated color and structure. An intense ruby-red in the glass, this wine exudes aromas of cherry, raspberry, licorice, vanilla, baking spices and hint of balsamic volatility. Full bodied on the palate, there is a delightful interplay between the oak derived influences and the red fruits. This is a perfect wine for roast lamb or pork and a great companion for barbecue.
