An unadultered pleasure to drink; fresh and invigorating, partly because it sees no oak, this wine also exudes an underlying richness, complexity and succulence that is the hallmark of well-made Chardonnay. The De Wetshof Estate produces a number of Chardonnays and has played a pioneering role in introducing this noble Burgundian grape to South Africa. One of De Wetshof's vineyards is planted on a hill where the limestone is so abundant it shimmers with a white light. Chadonnay and limestone seem to enjoy each others company the world over but, in addition, the Limestone Hill’s soil is rich with fine grained clays that retain moisture which the vines can access even when rains are scarce. The result is a delcious, site-specific Chardonnay at a remarkable price. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded this wine 91 Points with the following description: "The De Wetshof Estate Limestone Hill Chardonnay never sees oak, and offers impeccably pure, refreshing apple, peach and lemon fruit, a lovely leesy richness of texture, and a nutty, chalky, fruit-filled finish of imposing length. Understated and less tropical than some of the better un-oaked Chardonnays, this wine possesses far better balance and sheer drinkability - not to mention more finesse - than 99% of the world's Chardonnay I have experienced." As a culinary companion, Limestone Hill is superb with oysters, cream-based pasta dishes and light curries, as well as roast pork and veal dishes.
