One of the great wine rivers on the planet the Douro passes through a series of superb wine regions flowing east to west across Spain and Portugal. It is a mighty river, the largest of the Iberian Peninsula, and along its banks are some of the finest vineyards of Spain and Portugal. The Douro region in Portugal with its incredible terraced vineyards is most famous for its reds and especially for its age-worthy and powerful fortified Ports. The whites of the Douro do not, however, get the attention they deserve. Perhaps this one from the Quinta do Crasto can help remedy that omission. A blend of 40% Viosinho, 30% Gouveio and 30% Rabigato from high-altitude vines on granite soils that are harvested, destemmed and pressed after vigorous selection. 85 % of the blend is fermentated and matured in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the primary fruit and aromas. In addtion, 15% of the blend is fermented and aged in 225-litre used French oak barrels, with occasional lees stirring for three months. The result is a complex white with elements of citrus, ripe dessert apples, melon and with hints of bay leaf on the finish. This is a wine that is easy to drink but capable of standing up to a range of dishes. Grilled or roasted white-fleshed meats, cured meats, and soft cheeses. This would also shine with a classic Portuguese seafood stew, incorporating various shellfish and sausage.
