The region of Priorat in Catalonia is defined by rugged, inhospitable mountains, lined with the famous “licorella” soil consisting of brown and black slate. The rough terrain, that is dry, hot, and difficult to cultivate has seen a renaissance of sorts that began in the 90s with major innovators Daphne Glorian, Alvaro Palacios, Josep Luis Perez, and Rene Barbier seeing the potential of the region. Coster dels Olivers is made up of the classic blend of Carinyena (60%), Garnatxa (30%), and Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), all hand harvested, fermented in stainless steel and concrete, before being rested in neutral French and Hungarian oak for a year. Made entirely from sustainably farmed vines between fifteen to sixty-five years of age. This is a fresher style of Priorat that is made for immediate consumption being fresh and elegant in style opposed to the more powerful styles you typically see. A full-bodied wine with aromas of ripe cassis and blackberry, with herbaceous notes and slate undertones. It is structured on the palate with fine tannins and high acidity, but plenty of fruit characteristics that make it perfect for early consumption. Works well paired with Spanish classic like Jamon Iberico or Manchego cheese, or something a little less traditional like BBQ pulled pork or Filet Mignon.
