Colterenzio translates to “terrible hill” in Italian. Given the surrounding dramatic scenery of the Dolomite mountains, one must imagine it was named by someone who just made the climb. This is the Alto Adige if you speak Italian, or Sudtirol in German (both languages are equally common in the area). Viticult ure here goes back at least to Roman times, the impressive backdrop positively screaming the phrase “wine country” into the centuries (or “paese del vino...,” or “weinland...,” you get the idea). In 1960, some 28 winegrowers from the area joined forces and founded the Colterenzio winegrowers’ co-operative. Now with over 300 growers in tow, it has consistently been recognized as one of the best wineries in Italy. Participants hold themselves to high standards, using only organic fertilizers and biological pest control. Alto Adige is known for its white wines, and in the case of Colterenzio’s MüllerThurgau, the proximity to Teutonic countries like Germany and Austria is palpable. Profoundly aromatic with white florals and lime leaf tones followed by pleasantly soft citrus tones on the palate and a mouth-coating, broad viscosity, this is white wine with some real intrigue! Try it with weisswurst or brats, spicy south Asian cuisines, and hearty veggies like asparagus or artichokes.
